Thomas Paine, the author of ‘The Rights of Man’ lived and worked as an excise officer in Lewes from 1768 – 1774. His freethinking and radical ideas influenced both the French and American revolutions and it is thought that he helped draft the American Declaration of Independence. President Obama often quotes Paine in his speeches - in particular at his inauguration address in January.
Tom Paine formulated many of his ideas while living in Lewes and the town will be holding a festival to celebrate his life from July 4 (American Independence Day) to July 14th (French Independence Day)
To commemorate the bicentenary of his death Harveys has a range of memorabilia available at our online shop and a special edition mug available at the Brewery Shop in Lewes.
